International Society of Bassists Convention is fast approaching
It’s hard to believe, but the International Society of Bassists convention at Penn State is nearly upon us. I’ll be there live blogging like a fool, so please come up and say hi if you see me. I’ll probably try to give you one of my, er, nonstandard business cards if I see you.
Interested in what’s going to be happening at the ISB convention? Here’s a complete list of events (this is subject to change). Be sure to check the ISB website regularly for a current list of events. You can also download a PDF version.
Think there’s enough to see at this bass extravaganza?

Chicago Bass Ensemble Concert on 5/27/09 in Evanston
Hey–a bass concert where I’m actually playing! I’ll be playing the following event with the Chicago Bass Ensemble (check out these guys being interviewed and performing) at the Music Institute of Chicago in Evanston on Wednesday, 5/27:
In the Name of Hope
a Benefit Concert
Celebrating the work of
Michael Miller,
pianist and composer
You are invited to a special tribute concert celebrating the work of Chicago pianist and composer Michael Miller, May 27 7:30pm (Wednesday) at Nichols Hall in Evanston.
Members of the Chicago area performing arts community are joining together for this benefit concert as a tribute to Michael Miller’s work as a performer and composer. This event will feature performances by prominent Chicago musicians including mezzo-soprano Julia Bentley (CUBE ensemble, Lyric Opera and Santa Fe Opera apprenticeships), pianist Fiona Queen, award-winning vocal performer Danielle Brothers, double bassist Douglas Johnson, violinist Nina Saito, English horn player June Matayoshi, and other surprises. The concert will feature compositions by Robert Schumann, Kurt Weill, and Michael Miller.
The Chicago Bass Ensemble will perform two short works on this concert: an arrangement by Miller of Robert Schumann’s Traumerei and an original composition by Miller, Caught, part of a planned multi-movement work for bass quartet.
Michael is entering into an indefinite period of inactivity as a performer, having recently been diagnosed with a neurological condition which greatly impairs the use of his arms. Proceeds from this concert will go toward assisting Michael Miller through this challenging time of personal transformation.

My recommendations for International Society of Bassists 2009 Convention
Here’s a short (10 minute) video where I go through the schedule for the 2009 International Society of Bassists Convention and point out cool presenters and events to check out. There’s far too much going on for me to go into much detail, but this will give you a good idea of what to check out. By the way, I think you’ll be amazed a how many Contrabass Conversations guests are among the presenters!
Larry Yaeger featured at ACM talk this Friday
I had the good fortune to be the guest speaker for the January 2009 meeting of the Chicago Chapter of the ACM, which was a great experience (I’ll try to put out a screencast of this event in the near future). If you can make it, you’d really get a lot out of this Friday’s talk with Larry Yeager:
The Path to Artificial Life presented by: Larry Yaeger
The Chicago Chapter of the ACM features Larry Yaeger as guest speaker on April 17th (evening). Larry Yaeger has made leading technical contributions to the space shuttle program, motion pictures, artificial life, and handwriting recognition.
Larry has worked on fluid dynamic simulations of the space shuttle; software development of the first photo-realistic computer generated imagery for motion pictures; and handwriting recognition and the Mac UI as Distinguished Scientist at Apple Computer. He is currently Full Professor in the School of Informatics at Indiana University Bloomington.
He will be speaking about his long term project Artificial Life (ALife) which is a system of low-level interactions producing large-scale phenomena in feedback loops. ALife began as part of the Vivarium project led by Alan Kay at Apple Computer as an “ecology in the computer” with an interface children could use but powerful enough to simulate a real environment. Polyworld, Yaeger’s version of the project, was recently featured on the Discovery Channel’s NextWorld.
Larry will guide us through his eclectic path in science: aeronautics, computer graphics, and neural nets that culminate in Artificial Life.

My Talk at the University of Illinois

I’ll be doing a talk at the University of Illinois at Chapmaign-Urbana this Thursday on how to best go about setting up teaching studio, something that I’ve given a lot of thought about over the years. I’m actually in the midst of writing a multi-part series on this topic!
The speaking engagements have really ramped up for me this past year–this is my fourth one in as many months. I enjoy doing these events a lot, regardless of the topic, and I am definitely amassing an archive of talks that I can do again at some future date! When I do an event like this, I always sit down with Keynote (a Mac-only program that makes Powerpoint look like a pile of puke) and basically create the whole talk within that program. I’d probably still use Keynote as my prepping software even if I wasn’t actually using it for the talk; it really helps me to organize my thoughts.
Another benefit of using Keynote is that after I do these talks I can put together a video of the presentation with new dialogue and put it out online. I did that with my book talk from 2008, and I’ve got a few more old Keynotes on various topics (string teaching, blogging, and now studio development) that I’ll be putting out when my schedule let up in….well, June.
Ugh. Too busy!
Celebrate Mendelssohn’s 200th Birthday with the Chicago Philharmonic
Here’s an event this weekend from a group I’ve played with many times in the past:
Sunday, March 15 at 7 p.m.
Pick Staiger Hall, Northwestern University, 50 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston
Join the critically acclaimed Chicago Philharmonic for an enchanting evening celebrating the 200th birthday of German composer Felix Mendelssohn. Titled “Mendelssohn’s 200th Birthday,” the concert begins at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 15in the intimate Pick-Staiger Hall located on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston. A carefully chosen ensemble will perform Mendelssohn’s moving Octet in E-flat major.
This was a piece Mendelssohn composed at the very young age of 16. In addition to Mendelssohn’s Octet, the Chicago Philharmonic will perform Franz Schubert’s Trout Quintet in A Major, D. 677, and Bohuslav Martinu’s Quartet for Clarinet, Horn, Cello and Side Drum (1924), H. 139. Following the performances, theater patrons will be invited to a lovely soiree with wine and hors d’oeuvres and a chance to mingle with the musicians. Tickets to “Mendelssohn’s 200th Birthday” are $70 on the main floor, and $60, $33 and $20 in the balcony.
Student tickets are $10, available in the lobby before the performance. Group discounts are available. Special seating is available for handicapped. Free parking is available in the adjacent parking garage.
Call the box office at 847.866.6888 or visit www.chicagophilharmonic.org to reserve a seat.
