Bassfest 2007 photos and video
The 2007 Whitewater Winter Bassfest, an event that I started five years ago at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, just happened a couple of weekends ago. Scott Kreger, the new double bass instructor at UWW and a member of the Milwaukee Symphony, was teaching there, as were double bassists Kate Nettleman and Peter Tambroni.

His Royal Highness, Montana de Montecore, Conducts the Orchestra
I always knew that my cats stole my baton and conducted imaginary symphonies when I left hom, but I didn’t catch them until just now.
When Paradise Catches Fire
Matt Heller, my double bass colleague who was recently featured in the New York Times, recently posted this shot of a building on fire near the Plymouth Hotel (a residence for New World Symphony members):
Those of you who have read my exploding car gig story know how much I dislike fire.
Beautiful shot of Io, Jupiter’s volcanic moon
Here is an outstanding shot from the NASA website:
The caption reads:
Io is a colorful place. The closest large moon of Jupiter, Io has the most volcanic activity of any moon in the solar system with its surface being completely buried in volcanic lava every few thousand years. The black and red material corresponds to the [...]
Attention: The cats have now taken over the Bass Blog
The cats are now running things here.
All they ask is that you don’t pick them up.

Winter Driving Nightmares
I hate being passed by trucks in the winter. Getting slush and gravel splattered on the windshield of my puny car always makes me grip the steering wheel a little tighter. At least I’ve never been passed by trucks like these (photos from Dark Roasted Blend):
Does that truck look stable to you?
Cleveland Volcano, Aleutian Islands
The following image comes from the NASA archive. Volcanoes are an amazing thing to behold:
Here is the NASA data for this plume of smoke:
At 3:00 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on May 23, 2006, Flight Engineer Jeff Williams from International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 13 contacted the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) to report that the [...]
Driving in Yakutsk is Always an Adventure
This is a follow-up to a post I wrote highlighting the world’s most dangerous roads. The original source where I found these insane photos is Dark Roasted Blend, one of my favorite blogs. These photos of Yakutsk area roads in Siberia are pretty disturbing. Bad things happen when one builds cities on [...]
