A: Folk ensembles, gigging opportunities. Diversity of student body, all the resources of a large state school. Campus is located in a rural and scenic area of the state.

About The Bass Faculty

Garry Wasserman, Assistant Professor and Double Bass Artist Faculty at Ohio University, has been a member of the Florida Philharmonic, Harrisburg Symphony, Hong Kong (China) Philharmonic, full time performer with the Indianapolis Symphony, Indianapolis studio session artist, Principal Bass with the Columbus Bach Ensemble, and Principal with the Ohio Valley Symphony. He has freelanced with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and the Louisville Orchestra. Summer festival participation have included serving as Principal Bass with the Wintergreen (Virginia) and Classical (Eisenstadt Austria) Music Festivals, and tutti positions with the Great Music West (Bear Lake Utah), Bellingham, (WA) and Puccini (Italy) Music Festivals. Currently, he performs as an associate member with the Columbus Symphony and continues to maintain activity in the Indianapolis music scene.

Dr. Wasserman studied at Indiana University and earned the BM in performance as a student of Murray Grodner, continuing masters studies with Bruce Bransby. Additional studies have been with Anthony Bianco of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Eugene Levinson and Stuart Sankey at the Aspen Music Festival, Lawrence Hurst at Indiana University, and Matthew Zory of the Cincinnati Symphony. He earned the DMA degree at Ohio State, authoring the first known compendium of American bass makers.

Highlights of solo engagements include recitals in Hong Kong, Miami, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Athens. He presented a solo/duo recital at the 2005 International Society of Bassists convention, and performed on the church bass for a presentation on the American bass maker Prescott at the 2013 ISB convention.

He has presented lectures on American bass lutherie at the University of Louisville (2014), the International Society of Bassists convention (2015), and a poster presentation at the American String Teachers Association conference (2015). Dr. Wasserman is a frequent clinician with the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras, OMEA Regional Orchestras, and the Ohio All State Orchestra. He also has taught orchestra repertoire classes at Ohio State University.
