About The Bass Faculty

Dr. Larry Arnold is Professor of Music and Media Integration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He teaches music theory, electronic music, composition, jazz bass and Media Integration Studies. He has served as Secretary of the North Carolina Unit of the International Association for Jazz Education, and is a founding member of the UNCP Digital Academy and the UNC Digital Content Consortium. Dr. Arnold is also much in demand as a performer–with an average of 200 professional engagements each year as choir accompanist, and on bass, piano and guitar.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in piano performance, Arnold attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a music composition student. While at UW he studied with Stephen Dembski, Joseph Straus, Bruce Benward and Joel Naumann, and was awarded a Graduate Fellowship to study Medieval and Renaissance music theory with a focus on the Ballate of Francesco Landini. He was also a founding member of the Wisconsin Alliance for Composition and premiered works by fellow composers at statewide conferences of that organization.

While pursuing studies (Ph.D., Music Composition) at the University of Iowa, several of Dr. Arnold’s jazz compositions were broadcast on Iowa Public Radio. His concert works were premiered by St. Mark’s Methodist Church, the UI Lutheran Campus Ministries, the UI Center for New Music and the Midwest Composers Consortium (a collaboration of five Big Ten music departments and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music). At the University of Iowa he taught honors sections of music theory, was operations manager for the UI Center for New Music, and was also administrative assistant to the Chair of the Music Theory and Composition Department.

Recently, Dr. Arnold has co-founded the UNC Pembroke Media Integration Studies program with Dr. John Labadie (Art) and Mr. George Johnson (Mass Communications). The UNCP Media Integration Program focuses on the creative use of computer technology in an interdisciplinary, student-centered environment. It is the first program of its kind in North Carolina to earn recognition as a New Media Center, the New Media Consortium is an international collaboration between universities and computer software and hardware companies formed to encourage innovative uses of technology in higher education.
