Story Time: Cabs – Video Episode

This is the video version of my recent Story Time with Contrabass Conversations episode about cabs. It’s…well…..sort of a video, anyway. Check it out and see. I have taken various photos and put them together in a kind of slideshow/documentary/video podcast episode. If you’re a podcast subscriber (and if you’re not, you click here to subscribe for free–all the cool kids are doing it) you’ll be getting this episode in the feed soon. If you have problems playing this video, you can also watch it in the bass blog video player in the sidebar of the blog.

Talk about layers on top of layers! Now there is a video version of this story, an audio version, and a text version. This is the sort of thing that I really enjoy putting together, and I hope that you enjoy watching it. I’ll be adding both and audio and video player to the original story, so that folks can choose which of the three methods of presentation (audio, video, or text) they most prefer. I’ll be doing the same thing with my other crazy gig stories over a period of time, so expect to see more projects like this coming down the pipes soon.

Story Time with Contrabass Conversations launching this week

Ever since I got into podcasting, I have been itching to do what I’m launching this week.  My original idea for starting a podcast was something like a combination of Digital Flotsam (if you haven’t heard this show, stop what you’re doing and check it out–it’s fantastic) and This American Life–in other words, I wanted to create a whimsical story show with music, ambient noise and effects, and songs related to the content.  I started the Contrabass Conversations podcast because this was the topic that I knew the most about, and there was a dearth of audio and material in a regular episodic format for this subject, but in the back of my mind I’ve always been kicking around the idea of how to incorporate some of my own stuff in this project (apart from hosting it, producing it, and the like).

Anyway, I finally worked up the guts to try this sort of thing, using some of my favorite crazy gig stories as material and adding sound effects, musical backing tracks, background noise, and other production elements to make little (around 10 minutes) lighthearted tales from the blog.  I’ve been having a grand time putting these together, and although I make no promises as to the frequency of these audio tales (they take a lot of work!), I shall try to put them out at least somewhat regularly.  Once I wrap up a story, I will also put a player on the related story page here on the blog, so that folks can click the player and listen along as they read the story and check out the photos.

These episodes will be called Story Time with Contrabass Conversations, and the first story to launch will be Basses, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Part 1: Cabs.  Expect My Car Caught Fire and Exploded! to follow soon.

Weekly Wrap-Up

I spent the past two weeks performing with the Grant Park Symphony. This has been a real treat for me, both musically and personally. The GPSO is a great ensemble, and we played a lot of excellent repertoire, including Beethoven 2, Mahler 5, and the Firebird Suite. Bass blog readers will actually be familiar with many of the bass players in this section. Most of them have contributed ideas, photos, videos, or interviews to the blog at some point. Check out a funny photo of this bass section trapped in an elevator here. (elevator photo and Millennium Park photo courtesy of John Floeter)

We have another video episode from Ranaan coming up here shortly as well as the rest of our audio interview with him. For now, check out the video episode here and the audio episode here.
