oboeinsight mentions my recent posts

I’d like to thank Patty Mitchell for mentioning both my pay-per-student post and my Nutcracker story on her recent post from oboeinsight. She mentions a very funny incident from a Nutcracker performance in San Jose. This great story was also told by someone else in the comments of my Nutcracker story. Patty [...]

Significant 2006 Bass Blog Posts

As 2006 draws to a close I would like to highlight the more significant posts made this year on the Bass Blog. I started this blog a little less than a year ago and for the first six months basically just used it as a student management tool. The content management system that [...]

Franz Simandl in Ceremonial Dress

Here is a great shot courtesy of Greg Sarchet featuring the great double bass pedagogue Franz Simandl in full ceremonial dress. I especially like the sword he has on his belt. That Simandl was one fearsome bass teacher–one false move in your bass lesson with him could have proved to be your last.

Tainting the Academic Waters with Pay-Per-Student Teaching

Having recently resigned from two adjunct university positions, I feel the urge to share some of my concerns about how such positions are administrated at many universities in the United States. These concerns are based on my own experiences as an adjunct double bass instructor and upon many conversations with colleagues at other universities. [...]

François Rabbath - Beyond the Bass Line

I recently discovered this site devoted to the great double bassist François Rabbath. It was created by one of Rabbath’s relatives and is a great place to start learning about this double bass virtuoso and master pedagogue. It contains a links page to recordings and publications, information about news and workshops, and a [...]

Double Bassist Jeff Bradetich on YouTube

I recently found this video of double bassist Jeff Bradetich playing the Gigue from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 on YouTube:

Here is a quote from Jeff’s bio:
Proclaimed by the New York Times as “the master of his instrument,” Jeff Bradetich is regarded as one of the leading performers and teachers of [...]
