Here’s a video of Gary Karr describing the history of the ‘Amati’ double bass. Gary talks about the origins of this bass (further research of the instrument has shown that it was not likely to have been made by the Amati brothers) and how it came to be in his possession.

If you’d like to see a video of me playing the same bass you just saw Gary perform on, follow this link and hear some bass blogger music from the famous ‘Amati’ bass. You can also read about my experiences playing this bass in my article Tackling the ‘Amati’.

Incidentally (this kind of thing always makes me laugh), some lovely bloke left a comment disputing that I had ever performed on Gary’s old bass. I believe the comment was “why do you fill the world with your crazy lies?” I apologize for all the crazy lies I spread on a daily basis, but this performance did in fact happen.

Here’s a shot of my former student Eric Steffens with the famed instrument. Eric is studying bass in Vienna right now, and he has a blog detailing these experiences.
