Here are some video excerpts from U.S. double bassist Jacy Cobalis that he compiled for his NJO Summer Academy (Netherlands) audition tape.
It’s really cool (and brave!) of Jacy to put these up on YouTube, and I hope that we’ll be seeing more of this as time goes on.
It’s also interesting to see festivals which require audition tapes to make the switch to requiring video submissions rather than audio. Splicing and dicing video is a whole lot more challenging than audio, and this requirement keeps people from editing their audition tapes. It’s so easy to make edits in audio these days, and this requirement ensures that folks are (for the most part) sending in straight takes rather than chop jobs.

The solo tuning is an interesting touch. Is that a requirement for that particular festival?
I’m not sure why he’s using solo strings. Interesting–I did that once and got yelled at.
