As I was wheeling my bass down the street the other day, I passed by a homeless person with a shopping cart filled with all sorts of stuff–blankets, cans, old bottles, newspapers, and all sorts of other various items piled high.
I approached, carrying not only my bass but also my stool and my laptop bag crammed with books, pads of paper, and my giant Acer laptop.
As I neared him, he started grinning, and said:
"Now that’s a big load!"

Sometimes we view the homeless as though they are aliens from space, and they live in thier own little world. But in actuality they are human beings like the rest of us. We are always amazed when they realize we exisit.
I have a related story of sorts:
This weekend is the big weekend before the Boston Marathon so there is people EVERYWHERE.
It was a nice day and my wheel happened to have a flat so I decided to walk back from my gig instead of taking the T. Going down the road looking like an ant carrying a very large leaf with my suit coat hanging on the case I got a few interesting stares.
About halfway home I walk past a few construction workers looking out at the crowds. As I pass I hear one of them say “Looks like the bass is carrying HIM”
I didn’t know whether to respond or be glad that he knew it was a bass, haha.
And Debo, I think the story was more about the irony of the situation of a man carrying his whole being saying that to Jason rather than him acknowledging Jason existed. I do agree with what you say though.
