My good friend Andy Giller (a former New World Symphony member) forwarded this link of Steve Metcalf rehearsing the Bottesini Concerto with his local youth orchestra. The orchestra sounds like you’d expect from a high school group in the early stages of putting together this piece (not that I’m ripping on them at all–they’re doing a good job), but listen to how Steve just nails this concerto. I think that this is really excellent bass playing, and if the next generation of bassists plays like what we’re hearing from Steve, then we’re in good hands!

PS: It looks like the sound is just a smidgen out of sync with the video, so it might be a bit disorienting to watch, but it’s well worth it for Steve’s bas playing.
