You have to have been living under a rock not to have heard about the YouTube Symphony project. This is likely to be the first of many online collaborative projects like this, and I can only think that it helps the world of classical music.
London Symphony principal players have been posting videos to help people prepare their parts for the YouTube Symphony audition. Here’s LSO Principal Bass Rinat Ibragimov on Tan Dun’s Eroica Symphony.
My favorite line?
“If you play at the wrong time, all the orchestra will laugh at you….which happened the first rehearsal with me!”
\
You only have until Wednesday, January 28 to submit audition recordings, so be sure to get them in if you’re planning on a shot at the orchestra.

I’m rather unimpressed by his playing in this video. The Beethoven excerpt is very out of tune and rough. Even if the recording was not well done and he wasn’t playing well that day it seems remarkable that the principal of the LSO plays a famous excerpt so rough.
From the recordings on his website which are played very well it is hard to believe the same person is playing in this video!
No, its just on his website its all studio job, if you understand what i mean…
this is only the proof that orchestral-musicions are not the best
to find!!! (but they love to act like this….)
If this is how he playes things that sould be his Standards –
he is getting his living for this kind of playing , now i understand why no so less bass players today in europe are getting job.
I’m so happy that the bass world still have people like Gajdos,
Karr, Tuneh, Furtok etc.
these guys are making this guy looking like a Joke!!!!!!
apropos “the same person is playing in this video”:
2007, D. Barenboim organized Mr. Tuneh together with N. Shehata
to lead the Bass section of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.
Since Mr. Shehata needed to fly to Berlin (to play with “his Orchestra”) and Mr. Tuneh was under 41° c. fever, no one else could play the Solo part that evening, so, Guy Tuneh performed
with 41° fever. he played not only the Solo part as Barenboim
asked him, he played the whole F+++ing concert!!!
(& it was outstanding)
I know that we souldnt compare, its like two different worlds, but, even with 41° fever Tuneh played much much better then this guy, and G. Tuneh is not a an orchestra musicion!
(its not like he is playing every day in an orchestra for living and still he has more “power” in this field.)
However i think that Mr. Ibragimov had a hard day…
and he is a good bassist!
“If you play at the wrong time, all the orchestra will laugh at you….which happened the first rehearsal with me!”
show the real face of that orchestra!
I wonder what Gajdos, Karr, Rabbath, Tuneh etc. & the rest of the Real Bass-stars would say about his playing??
I heared about some Auditions for this orchestra that no one got
to the 2nd round… (from 60 players, on one was good to pass the 1st round, funny …)
To comment that Guy Tuneh’s “arms are to short”, “out of tune”, “bow is not paralel to the brige”, “selfish”, “dont know how to play the bass”, getting so low and personaly…
As a “LSO Principal Bassist” with such a big title, this guy is looking and sounding like a joke comparing to Guy Tuneh!!!
calling this “performance” good bass playing or Master class???
… its very very normal.
What does he show???
music??
Artistic level??
tune????!!
Its evel how some people commented Tuneh’s playing!!! (very low).
but now its clear why, pure Anvy and the fact that one of the great bassists alive is not an Orchestra musician like most of you!!!!
and dont understand me wroge,
Tuneh is not the only one who makes this guy looking like a joke!
Patkolo, Ruiz, Gajdos, Gary Karr, Furtok, E. Meyer, Rabbath, Mr. McTier, K. Lutaru and many many other great bassists, some of them are in CBC by Jason !!!!
So this is how you should play as a Solo-Bassist in one of the leading Orchestras in the world??
Its funny how the Orchestra of YouTube help the people who dont play in Orchestra to see the true about the people who are inside!!
and its not only this bassist, the rest of the “masterclass” with other instrumants is not much better!
sorry guys!
LSO: You should have a New rule:
Dont drink and play bass!
Man…..
he looks like he is on his end!
You really shouldn’t judge until you have 1) actually heard him perform in a real concert setting 2) spoken to him 3) Studied with him… I have and he is a fantastic, intuitive, intelligent and passionate musician. It is an awfully strong opinion that any of you think to degrade him like this… Its pitiful. There are many styles and schools of bass playing. Many of you speak of Karr, who himself I think would not make a very good orchestral musician AT ALL! Rinat Ibragimov is a fantastic musician and bassist
Rinat, you are the best…
Tuneh is not the only one who makes this guy looking like a joke!
Patkolo, Ruiz, Gajdos, Gary Karr, Furtok, E. Meyer, Rabbath, Mr. McTier, K. Lutaru and many many other great bassists, some of them are in CBC by Jason !!!!
Do you know the year of Rinat Ibragimov’s birth? I have been compiling a photo album on Facebook of my favorite string players, and giving brief entries about each of them.
I have been totally unable to discover what year Rinat Ibragimov was born in.
Thank you for any help you can provide me.
Hi David–I’m not sure about that–sorry!
