Here’s a video of Guy Tuneh (who has appeared many times both here on the blog and on Contrabass Conversations), one of the most captivating bassists active on the music scene today, performing The Elephant from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns. What a great rendition! I’m going to be sure that all of my students watch this video before they start working on this piece.

Thank you for posting this Jason. It is absolutely delightful, filled with elegance and humor (kind of like Babar).
AMAZING…….
What a GENIUS!!!,
His ELGAR was a firm for that.
the pizz idea is phenomenal….
as Eline said absoluteley right!
“one of the most captivating bassists active on the music scene today…”
indeed!!, this Guy is a walking legend!
Wowww, first time to use fly-spiccato in this work and in an AMAZING way its come together just GREAT!
also first time of doing Pizz, in the last theme, its brillant!!
why nobody came to this idea before (teachers and Profesors)?????!!
what a superior teachnic, what an amazing DRAMA/choreography, what an ARTIST!
Great example of what can happend when a Soloist put his magic on non solo work, BRAVO.
after his ELGAR and right now, I wonder: where does he get this ideas??
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO ………..never heard this work like this is new and brilliant!
thanks J.
Didnt he say he use snakewood bow?
Thanks Jason for this outstanding video, it will help me next week in my final-test!!
Apropos L’Elephant, Is Guy Tuneh goin to take a part in the next ISB Convention??
One of a kind player!!
I have CDs of Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, both, play the Elephant as Tutti, it does sound sometimes like a Tractor Engine…
Double-bass Maestro Guy Tuneh’s rendition is charming, its like from other star comparing the whole bass-man-group of the Vienna Phil.
I think from today on, a new tradition of playing this solo born!
For someone to bring so many wonderful ideas on bass (Rococo-Elgar etc.), and showing new teachnicl limits, creating a new-wave – BRAVO M° Tuneh!
I thought that Tuneh is “special” because of his way of playing works that no one played before, its like he runaway from the standard- like he cannt play the “simple” things,
but
now I see that the simple things he does phenomenal…
its like he is allready have been there!
BRAVO.
(Now I get way some low commants, he is like a Legend…)
P a r a d o x i c a l !
Tha big , slow, Elephant dance so light and elegant with so much charm, its F A N T A S T I C !
Guy Tuneh did his research, according to Saint-Saëns handwrite, the Elephant is a WOMAN-Elephant and not a MAN-Elephant, so Tuneh’s rendition/choreography to that dance is GENIUS!
(Bravo for using choreography in playing-amazing, most of the players never heard that word!)
look at that smile after the last note, delightful he is so sweet!
Pity that the piano-player is not understanding some things.
OMG,
He looks like 100 years old,
So its true that Talented people are getting older fast
and may burn themselves young…
Yep, this is the price of playing/beeing so Special.
Did Nabil Shehata see this Video??
Summer 2005 live in ARTE-televion,
Dear Double-bass section of the Berlin Philharmonic,
Dear Maestro, Conductor, Virtuos, pianist and double-bass Prof.- Nabil Shehata,
Did you see this Video?
Looks to me that Mr. Shehata need more than a Barenboim to help him this time, after his “special-version” of the Elephat, sure that some people of this side of earth will understand my point,
however
Bravo Tuneh, You are to good to be No. 1 !
why cannt i see my comment?
Woww,
AMAZING!
Why are blocking responses?
Jason Heath is censoring free speech.
I’ve tried to post several times but he won’t allow me to and all I have is a contrasting view-point without any foul language.
Here is my opinion: Yes, Mr. Tuneh’s playing is “charming”…But he’s not the best in my opinion. He makes such funny mannerisms when he plays and his bow technique is a bit over the top with how not into the string he plays.
I moderate all comments on this blog and generally go through the comment queue once per day. This is due to hate speech and inappropriate comments that come through. This blog gets a lot of comments, so it takes me time to go through this material.
Also, this is not a public forum–this is a blog that I run, and I reserve the right to approve or delete any comment as I see fit. That’s how a blog works. I actually DO approve a lot of negative comments. I don’t recall the comments you mentioned posting, and I apologize if I deleted them inadvertently. I like to see debates get going on this blog, and I like hearing a lot of different viewpoints. But you’d be amazed at the hateful and vitriolic stuff that comes across my virtual desk in the form of comments. I simply have to approve them one-by-one.
A lot of kids read this blog, and I want to keep this place clean and not let crazy ranting comments stream under each post. If I didn’t moderate then that’s what would happen. I’m sorry if this is annoying, but this isn’t actually a public forum–it’s my blog. It even says so in the title! I welcome comments, but I will “censor” as I see fit. This is my policy. I even have a page on the blog describing this policy: http://doublebassblog.org/features/blogging-policy
I’ve found that people write things online that they’d never say in person. As a result, the level of discourse gets really low online–an perusal of YouTube comments will demonstrate this. If this starts to happen here (and it does), I try to nip it in the bud.
To “Daniel”,
but of course:
You are the Best!
Your teacher is the Best!
and
Your Bow-Technique is right into the string!
Nothing wrong with his “into the string”, every note is 100%
clear!!!
Its just amazing, no one spoke about been the best, but it comes from you in that way – maybe you thing that he is the best, and you have problem with that – ‘cuse you play in other way!!!
AMAZING how some people just dont know how to go with anvy!
Well, after so many video of this phenomenal bassist, I think that in this work this is the most Sweet way to play it.
No need to proof nothing about “into the string” – 15 people speaking about great art, and one person let us go to speak about moronic way of thinking,
No one care about “into the string” – the guy is GENIUS stands above all the “School” bla bla – everybody is inspirited
and happy finaly to get new light on this work!!
Daniel go to your “Into the string” teacher and tell him to teach you about “giving compliment without to anvy to deth”
Morons, please stay out from this kind of conversations!!!
“Into the string”, ha ha ha ha ha ……….
is it a bass blog or comedy show??
Daniel,
every note is into the string sounds clear, sound worm and a live, even the fly-spiccato is perfect!!!, every note is 100% to hear and with so much charactor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can you play fly-spiccato in that way?
can you create this kind of sweet/special ton?
show us!
what is your real problem!!!
Daniel, normaly I dont answer to comments like you commented but today I will,
In Music/Art there is no “the Best”, but there is to be inspirited or not.
Double-bass virtuoso Guy Tuneh is one of very very very few that can make people inspirited!!!! (& I’m not speaking only about bass-player)
Nobody cares how he play (and he is a phenomenal-player, ‘cuse without to be one he would never be able to inspirite so many people world wide…) the thing is his personality, idaes and his amazing way of making music using the bass!!!
however
Bravo Guy!!
“Jason Heath is censoring free speech”
NO No No …
Jason censoring “moronic free speech” that came from the bottom of the anvy way of life – leading to evel un-fair comments!!!
BRAVO Jason !!!
Tuneh, you are great!!!, hope to hear and to see you in summer in italy again!
Guy Tuneh is fine! one of the finest out there!
like a Nobel Primadona!
Just
Fine fine fine fin fine fine fine and one more time fine!
and
GENIUS!
To be like him you need first:
to work very hard, study from the best de la best!
second:
a bit of talent that can help you to go your own way and to have your own still.
one more thing: to have a great music in your soul!
“Good to go” Daniel Halbert ??
Adorable in its uniqe/perfect way of performing!!.
(but why T-shirt?)
Thanks for this FANTASTIC video.
“Daniel”, in some things Guy Tuneh is the Best!!!
Absolutely one of a kind!
This kind of Talent is very uniqe and very rare!
No need to try to find under the earth negative things to say.
Just be happy that he share this with us and give us so much to think, see, learn and so much inspiration!
All the best for you Daniel
Anton.

BRAVISIMO Maestro de Maestri!
Thanks Guy, you are a true inspiration!!!!!!
Dear Mr. Tuneh, are You goin to take a part in the next
ISB convention?
Um pa pa Um pa,
Its marvelous!
I cann’t ignore his way of playing this comparing to my CD of the Vienna-Philharmonic playing that work.
From today a new standard is set, any other way would be just
superficial and boring.
