Sound designer, composer and (now) instrument maker Diego Stocco has created a hybrid instrument by combining a violin, viola, cello, and bass into one instrument. What a cool idea! Here’s a video of Diego putting together the instrument and playing this amalgamation (he uses drum sticks, a bass drum pedal, and even a fork to play it!):

Interesting … although screwing the bridges and tailpieces onto the top is painful to watch.
Musically, it’s too bad that there doesn’t seem to be any way to play melodically on any of the four necks and sets of strings: no room to bow (for the most part) and little room to use the fingerboards. Being played with drumsticks, hands and the occasional bow, it’s sort of a re-organized prepared piano.
I’ll have to check out Stocco’s other work. He’s certainly done a good job with microphone placement and audio production.
