What type of music degree should I get? There are many types of music degrees. I am going to introduce you to the four most common music degrees.

Bachelor of Music (BM)

•Professional degree in:
•Performance, Music Education, Composition, Jazz Studies, Music Therapy, and more.

Tip: make sure the institution is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

•Professional degree.
•Typically performance-based paired with a liberal arts curriculum.

Sometimes an “emphasis” will be included in the degree track. e.g. BFA in Music with an emphasis in Composition.

Bachelor of Arts (BA)

•Professional Degree.
•A liberal arts degree that is focused on the humanities.
•Typically not as music-focused as the BM or BFA.

Bachelor of Science (BS)

•Typically has more of an emphasis on science-based studies.
•e.g. Acoustics, audio engineering, music, and health.
•some performance is still required.
