Have any choice quotes you’ve heard during your studies (or perhaps….[gulp]… made yourself as a teacher)? I’ve got reams of them!
Here’s a perennial favorite. I’m not going to mention who specifically I heard this from:
“I play bass like Ferrari. You play like monkey with brain damage.”

One of my first teachers was a cello player. To get me to stop collapsing my left hand, she once said, “Think of it like a ‘c’, for…bass”
Jason,
How about this one: “I play bass like porsche, you play bass like retarded person in wheelchair” I think this was also in a masterclass setting in front of dozens of people.
I wasn’t there, but I never forgot when someone told me about this. I don’t know if this quote is funny or pathetic. What a jerk!!
John G.
“I am not your enemy.”
(Teacher’s identity withheld)
What about to quote real great teachers.
I had Masterclass with the great Guy Tuneh
and he was just amazing, helped me alot and gave me the power to go on, (after the things that my teacher told me i was at the end).
so, from now on also good quotes….
thing about it Jason.
Things that my teacher could not help me, even not the way to go on with me and my ideas (he also told me that i am a Little sh**t and he is Great…. ).
Mr. Tuneh was just the right one to help me !!!.
Great ideas, amazing technic, and to stay in the music and to believe in yourself!!
and not to think about politic and co…. .
Because of Tuneh i am playing much better !!!
and still playing the bass!!!
My first teacher was great and always full of wisdom:
“woman love bass players. they see you with that big instrument and how you hold its curves. Trust me.”
“There are people that can not hear the bass notes in the song but still call them selves bass players. I call these people “bass owners”
“People that vibrato with all of that tension just annoy me. What they don’t realize is that they sound like a mosquitos”
Responding to me playing a very slow Marcello sonata: “Kids today don’t know how to chill out. You think 90 bpm is slom. Put that metronome on 40 this song needs to be slower.
My bass lines 1 teacher (I suck at writing jazz bass lines having just started just getting into jazz) after collecting our choruses of blues that we wrote out:
“You know those sucked right? What I want you to do is go home and right me 2 more and make sure they’re better”
women*
OH, I almost forgot a famous quote from my high school orchestra director:
“Why am I right? Because I have my masters”
haha..good times
Thomas is right.
when a teacher can play good and have something to show you, he just doing it.
if your teacher is not a good player (and some of them are like this), then you can have some problems with him (because he has problems with himself).
I saw this lessen with Mr. Tuneh, mann ..
he can play you everything! showing you AMAZING ideas so that you ask; how does he do it?
and then he help you to find the way that you will play on your own way.
just Great!!
Only one thing to say to all of the “hero”
Jerky doublebass teachers:
Listen to Guy Tuneh’s Interview with the Great
Jason Heath…
If you will understand what Tuneh say, mybe you would be able to learn something new, like how to respect also other people.
I’m realy happy that adouble bass Virutos like the Great Mr Tuneh said what he say in that interview, it shows that the real Great artists
dont have time and they even dont need to do this kind of Shit to other “small”people (like students etc.).
Thank you Jason for this Tuneh Interview, you are helping us to be stronger against some assh ….
some of them thing that they are special or great…. ha ha ha..
This is turning into a jerky bass students thread…
Yep, As Guy Tuneh said, (in the interview);
A Great Teacher is also someone who brings you to the point that you can show your music ideas and to exprese your feeling with the bass,
and because of that to make us (the people who listen) to be inspirated,
someone who help us to understand the instrument and show us the way of learning also alone.
Teacher for life!!
but not everyone can teach on that level (only few can be this kind of teacher), so i guess that its the most easy think to do is to “Step” on the people who wish to get this kind of a teacher!
I think that every word in that interview = Gold.
and we sould not give stage to every one who thinks that he is a “Teacher”.
i had this kind of a “Teacher”, he used to call me a little Mouse, never gave me the help that i needed i realy hated him, i was thinking of stopping playing the bass.
After i heard this interview, and when i got to see
what Tuneh can do on his bass (my “teacher” can only kiss Mr. Tuneh’s Ass – Tuneh is like Bass God!!) and after i showed my “Teacher”
the Videos of Tuneh in Youtube,my “Teacher was at his end, i told him teach me how to play like him(Like Guy Tuneh) and my “Teacher” said;
Well, like this it will be hard…
so then i got it, my Ex “teacher” was a loser
who couldn’t go with his own problems, he was never happy because he knew that his talent is so limited.
and for the people who think that they can make s**t on the head of others there is only one lesen:
You can allways find someone stronger & biger!
