Uh-oh! Has this blog finally jumped the shark after all these years by finally playing something from Lawrence Welk. Actually, I probably jumped the shark years ago with the Jingle Cats (read the angry comments on this video from my readers–very amusing) or the Russian guy playing German bow in a very “special” way (this is probably my favorite bass video of all time).
Anyway, here’s bassist Buddy Hayes with Don Bonnee, Jack DuMont and Russ Klein, from 1960 and sent to me by Joe Claude. Enjoy!

What an animated bassist – all that shoulder and head movement!
The sound is pretty good too. I wonder if anyone happens to know how Buddy was mic’d? And I’m presuming gut strings? They look and sound that way . . . but then again, this ain’t HD tv.
That bass player really swings! The instrumental song is lovely too, a bit sleepy for me, but very nicely played. As long as they don’t have the “Little Lennon Sisters” I am fine with it. 🙂
Hey, looks like I need to get by Buddy moves down for my social gigs. Also, check your DePaul email for a UWW message.
“jumped the shark?” You are dating yourself.
